Retaining walls are built for many reasons: they are used for leveling sloped land, assisting in erosion control, as fencing, sound buffering and privacy barriers, used for terracing yards, and in landscape decoration. They can also be used to raise a water feature.

Retaining walls are usually indicated when the slope of land is inappropriate or unsafe. Retaining walls are also built to extend property out. The wall is built and backfill material is filled in and makes space more usable.

There are many materials that can be used for retaining walls; the material is based on the purpose of the wall. Walls are built from concrete (poured or blocks), natural stone (Keystone, Allan Block, Broadmoor Boulder, Pioneer Granite & Cimarron Granite boulders just to name a few), wood or timber.
